In May, Sea Punk I set sail across the central Mediterranean, determined to reach those risking everything for a chance at safety. Over three weeks, the crew helped rescue more than 300 people from unseaworthy boats off the coasts of Libya and Tunisia. Each rescue was a reminder of the human cost of closed borders and political inaction. As long as governments deny safe passage to those fleeing conflict and poverty, civil sea rescue will remain a beacon of hope in unforgiving waters.
